Many people's wisdom teeth need to be extracted due to a lack of space for them in the mouth. A good time to have wisdom teeth extracted is in the later teen years, although they can be done at other times. Dr. Travis Coulter has had extensive experience in removing impacted wisdom teeth.

Why do we have wisdom teeth?

Most people who have wisdom teeth end up needing to have them removed for a number or reasons. Many times, their mouth doesn’t have enough room to support another set of molars. Sometimes they come in at strange angles that cause them to be impacted. So why do we even have wisdom teeth if they always need to be removed? That’s a good question. The fossil record shows evidence that our mouth’s use to be bigger and due to our ancestor’s diet of roughage and raw foods, they needed another set of molars to help with the work of chewing.

Now our mouths are smaller and we have much easier-to-chew diet but the wisdom teeth remain. Fortunately, as long as you come in for regular checkups we can spot issues with your wisdom teeth before they begin to be a problem and make sure that they are removed before they can cause an issue.

Having Wisdom Teeth Removed

There are two different procedures to have wisdom teeth removed – simple removals and surgical removals. The term “simple removal” refers to a situation where the crown of the tooth is mostly exposed already. A tooth that has already fully or partially erupted can often be removed using a simple removal procedure. A simple removal is usually accomplished with the use of a special dental tool called an elevator that grips the crown of the tooth while it is rocked back and forth until it is loose enough to pull out of the jaw.

A surgical procedure is usually needed to remove wisdom teeth that are already impacted (have run into another structure in the mouth) or that have yet to erupt from the gum line.

Regardless of the kind of procedure that you need in order to have your wisdom teeth removed, we can promise that you will be comfortable and feel nothing other than some pressure in your mouth. We care deeply about your experience and want to make sure that you feel no discomfort.

At your consultation visit, Dr. Travis Coulter will discuss with you whether or not you need to have them removed. A panoramic x-ray will be taken at the same visit to aid in this diagnosis.
